Founded in 1989 the St.Petersburg Camerata has become one of Europe’s finest chamber orchestras; it is now the resident orchestra of the State Hermitage Museum.

“Their playing here achieves a fine balance between technical elegance and musical power, a fitting inauguration of SONY’s new series, featuring this orchestra.” (Alain Rich, Press-Telegram, 30.01.96)

The State Hermitage Orchestra was founded in 1989 by the outstanding conductor, People’s Artist of USSR, States Prizes winner, Professor Saulius Sondeckis. The first name of the orchestra was St. Petersburg Camerata, and the first members of this the youngest professional company of the country were students of the Leningrad Conservatoire. St. Petersburg Camerata soon became one of the best chamber orchestras in Russia. On February 14 1994, it was granted the unique status of resident orchestra of the State Hermitage, or the State Hermitage Orchestra.

The orchestra takes part in collaborative projects and programs administered by the State Hermitage and the Hermitage Friends’ Club. The concerts take place in the magnificent rooms of the Winter Palace, the Small Hermitage and the New Hermitage, the Hermitage Theatre and in summer time in the Great Courtyard of the Winter Palace.

The repertoire of this orchestra is surprisingly varied. It plays baroque, Russian symphony music, jazz and music from blockbusters.
Only the level of performance stays constant, that is to say a unique quality of sound and emotion.
In general, the range of its today’s projects fully reflect the multiple faces of the Hermitages exhibitions, the museum defined by its director M.B.Piotrovsky as an “ark of culture” of the modern world.

Throughout the years the orchestra collaborated with one of the best performers and conductors, such as M. Rostropovich, V.Spivakov,E. Kohn, F. Mastrangelo, N.Gutman, I.Monighetti, K.Ricciarelli, L.Kazarnovskaya, E.Obraztsova, R.Fleming, ex-Deep Purple Jon Lord, Andrea Bocelli and many others.

The greatest privilege of this orchestra is participation in the opening of the Hermitage exhibitions in the main museum’s building and in various cities of Russia as well.

Being created as a “company of the soloists” the State Hermitage Orchestra also plays as a string chamber orchestra very often, and usually participating in the Hermitage events with the Ensemble of the Hermitage Orchestra Soloists.
